What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a common condition caused by a build-up of plaque bacteria around the teeth and gums. If left untreated, it can lead to inflammation, bleeding gums, gum recession and, in more advanced cases, tooth loss.

The good news is that gum disease can often be prevented and managed with good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dental hygienist.

Why Do Gums Bleed?

Healthy gums do not usually bleed during brushing or cleaning between the teeth.

Bleeding gums are often one of the first signs of inflammation caused by plaque bacteria. If your gums bleed regularly, it is important not to ignore this and to seek professional advice.

Early treatment can prevent gum disease from progressing and help protect your teeth and gums for the future.

Gingivitis – The Early Stage

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is very common in adults.

Signs of gingivitis may include:
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender gums
  • Bad breath
  • Plaque around the gum line

Gingivitis is usually caused by plaque and tartar accumulating around the teeth. At this stage, there is no permanent damage to the bone supporting the teeth and, with professional treatment and improved home care, gingivitis is usually reversible.

Periodontitis – Advanced Stage

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis—where infection spreads deeper below the gum line and begins to affect bone and tissue supporting the teeth.

Symptoms of periodontitis may include:
  • Persistent bleeding gums
  • Gum recession
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Food trapping between teeth
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Changes in bite alignment

Unfortunately, bone loss caused by periodontitis cannot usually be reversed, but with the correct treatment it can often be stabilised and managed successfully.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may include:

  • Professional plaque and tartar removal
  • Detailed gum health assessments
  • Periodontal charting
  • Deep cleaning below the gum line
  • Personalised oral hygiene instruction
  • Ongoing maintenance appointments

As your dental hygienist, I will work closely with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and help you maintain healthy gums for the long term.

Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?

Most cases of gum disease can be prevented through:

  • Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Daily interdental cleaning / flossing
  • Regular dental hygiene appointments
  • Healthy diet and lifestyle
  • Avoiding smoking
